ISIS Freeware Tools

Set_CS: Set coordinate system (prj) on multiple files

Author: Jason Thomas, ISIS Center
Platform: Windows

This program allows the user to select a coordinate system (prj) from those provided by the software manufacturer (such as ESRI) or from the user's own shapefiles that already have coordinate sytems set in a prj file. The user can then select a target folder and assign the same coordinate system to all shapefiles in the target folder at one time. As users migrate from 3.2 to 8.x, the usefulness of .prj files for shapefiles has increased considerably. For one thing it allows users to take advantage of 8.x's reprojection on-the-fly capabilities to overlay data from multiple sources. A .prj file with each shapefile will also ensure that when you share your shapefiles, you will be letting everyone know what coordinate system is associated with your data, making it much more useful. ArcCatalog allows the user to set the coordinate system (prj) for only shapefile at a time, making it a time-consuming process for those with a large number of files.

This program is a stand-alone windows application. Thus, it is compatible with 8.1, 3.2 or any other program that uses shapefiles and recognizes .prj extension files. Download Set_CS.zip at ESRI ArcScripts.

Copy prj to shapefiles

Author: Tim Krohn, Fond du Lac Reservation
Platform: ArcView 3.2/Avenue

Copies selected coordinate system (prj) to multiple shapefiles, just like Set_CS (above) but implemented in ArcView 3.2 as an extension. This program also has useful features. It searches through all subfolders in a folder and find all shapefiles that do not already have a prj. The user can then select multiple files and apply a coordinate sytem (create prj) to all selected files.

XTools 3.0

Author: Max Sattarov (TaigaGIS, Inc)
Platform: ArcGIS 8.x/VB

An 8.x version of the popular 3.2 extension for calculating area, distance, working with tables and converting files among other things.

Enhanced Shapefile Creator 2.0

Author: Max Chikinev, Igor Popov (TaigaGIS, Inc)
Platform: ArcGIS 8.x/VB

This is the single most simple and helpful extension I have seen for 8.1. It basically gives the users back what we already had in 3.2: the ability to quickly create a new shapefile from within a map window. In 8.1 the ability to create shapefiles has shifted to ArcCatalog (the file management tool) which means that the user has to constantly switch programs (ArcMap to ArcCatalog) to get work done. With this extension you just click a button on your ArcMap toolbar and create a new shapefile. It also has more features than the View..New Theme function in 3.2.
