CGIA - Year 2002 - Advancement of Data Sharing Award:
The ISIS Center at CSU, Fresno is nominated for the year
2002-Advancement of data sharing award for its contribution to
the building of GIS infrastructure in Central California.
The ISIS center is a unique operation that is increasing its

three-fold mission; data center, education and training, and
research and analysis through grants and contracts. The
Center was a creation of the regional GIS community in
cooperation with CSU Fresno. ISIS is a fee-for-service operation
driving funding from its grants and research community-outreach
activities.
Data sharing activities include; a geography network node
serving regional interests, compilation of a regional based data
GIS catalog. Data sharing initiatives with several agencies,
and provision of a Fresno County field border database,
distributed free via its website. GIS projects and groups
include; field border database for Agricultural Research
Institute, subsidized childcare fro the Local Planning Council,
asthma and diabetes education for Community Hospitals, area studies
and access to programs fro the Workforce Investment Corporation
and the Workforce Connection, asset mapping for California State
Parks, school boundary alignment for Dos Palos, neighborhood

the Selma and Malaga areas, neighborhood studies for Fresno
Leadership Foundation, agricultural imagery for Agricultural Research
Institute, vegetation mapping for the San Joaquin River Conservancy,
and area studies for Fresno County Fire-CDF.
Over 200 people-mostly currently in employment - have taken GIS
skills upgrading workshops. ISIS also sponsors Quarterly
San Joaquin Valley GIS Users Meeting and one of the larger GIS
Day events annually. ISIS staff has been instrumental in organizing
the San Joaquin Valley Regional GIS Council. ISIS participates
in the Mid San Joaquin Valley Regional GIS Collaborative, a
monthly GIS users meeting, as well as with regional and state organizations.
To facilitate interaction among GIS users it hosts a website
that has data tables listing many of the GIS practitioners and
organizations throughout the valley.
Now in its third year of operation, the ISIS Center is bringing
to fruition many of the ideas and plans of GIS practitioners in
the region.
